Lessons Learned from the Five Previous Extinctions
There have been 5 mass extinctions on our planet so far and we are witnessing the 6th. During each one of the previous 5, almost 3/4 of all species died out over a short geological time of about 2.8 million years. According to scientists, this 6th is moving much faster. During the 20ieth century 543 land vertebrates became extinct, the pandemic added to crisis while scientists have long warned of irreversible changes on the planet.
And although species disappeared, life continued and regenerated. Scientists who study past extinction events can find clues about not only the evolution of life on Earth, but also about the effects of extreme changes in our planet’s atmosphere, and how life finds ways to rebound.
In this presentation, we will present an overview of the 5 previous extinctions (Ordovician-Silurian, Late Devonian, Permian-Triassic, Triassic-Jurassic and K-Pg), we will list lessons learned and we will attempt to signpost towards action that might provide an answer to stopping it. A short call to sensitize all as to how we can safeguard life on earth.
