Birth, Life, Death: Parallelisms in Different Scales
The mystery of life will remain such in its full meaning because our mental capacity cannot exceed its own self. The only way we can approach an understanding is to escape from the linear scale defined with the sequence “birth, life, death” and look at our world in all possible scales we can sense with our minds rather than senses. Conservation law, for example of energy, demands that any catastrophic to our view event causes the birth of another structure, and the latter can be considered a rebirth of the first but in another form. But are there true limits between the two forms in order to clearly distinguish them or it is an eternal change that occurs exactly when we define its starting point in time? A cloud changes its form continuously but still, at any instance, it is recognised to be a cloud.
Our approach is not to define birth-life-death as a sequence but rather as a permanent, eternal, continuing process that reforms us but still we are the same. This also means that we are timeless and dimensionless if viewed with a holistic approach. We will try to elaborate on these thoughts and by doing this, we might come to the conclusion that the definition of “life” is not different than a static wave, a vibration that is synchronised with a large set of periodic events, like the rising and setting sun, the rotation of the Earth and the Moon, the waves of the sea, the sounds we make when we speak, the pulse of our hearts, the cycles of our sleep, the rotation of the hands of our wristwatches.
All of these finally define our own individual cycle of birth-life-death, however in this temporary dimension only.

NAME: ELIAS CHADZITHEODORIDIS PROF DR

Dr Elias Chatzitheodoridis is Professor of Mineralogy-Petrology at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and Director of the Laboratory of Mineralogy-Petrology-Economic Geology. He studied Geology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and acquired his MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Manchester, UK. He worked at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete, at the Technical University of Vienna (TUWien), and at the high-tech private company Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG (AT&S AG) at LeobenHinterberg, Austria.
His research interests are in astrochemistry, astrobiology, and planetary sciences. He has also a strong applied research background on photonic technologies, micro- and nanotechnologies, lithography, microsystems (MEMS), and on the development of analytical instruments. He is CEO of the Network of Researchers on the Chemical Evolution of Life (NoRCEL), and Council Member of the European Astrobiology Network Association (EANA).
He has published more than a hundred peer reviewed scientific and technological papers, and he organised conferences in astrobiology and planetary sciences. He participated in a microgravity experiment through an ESA mission to the International Space Station (ISS) sending microorganisms to space. He is currently co-directing a working group of ESA’s ARIEL mission that will investigate exoplanet atmospheres. He is in the editorial board of the Astrobiology journal, he has reviewed articles in several journals, and he also reviewer and evaluator of many technological and space projects of the European Commission and of various National organisations.
