Discovering the News of Pregnancy: Responding to the News
Overview: This lesson explores the first recognition of pregnancy from multiple dimensions—maternal, paternal, familial, and social. The psychological impact of how pregnancy is received, accepted, denied, or resisted becomes a foundational matrix for the unborn baby. The lesson examines how these first relational and emotional responses encode a sense of welcome, rejection, or ambiguity and how these states may influence the baby’s developing identity and sense of belonging.
Assignment: Case Reflection Essay:
Reflect on how the emotional and social environment surrounding the news of a pregnancy might influence the prenate’s emerging self. Use case examples or fictional scenarios. Place it in a specific culture.
Write a case-based reflection analyzing how different emotional and relational responses to the news of pregnancy (welcome, rejection, ambivalence) may shape the developing baby’s sense of identity and belonging. Include possible long-term psychological effects and propose supportive interventions.
